Terms of Use
Last updated: 27 September 2026
Welcome to Hearth. By using the app you agree to these simple terms. Hearth is currently operated by an individual in the United States; we are in the process of forming a registered business entity and will name it, and give a postal address, here once that is complete. Until then, support@hearthgratitudejournal.com is the fastest and most complete way to reach us.
Who can use Hearth
You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age for using an online service without a parent's or guardian's consent where you live if that is older, to create a Hearth account. Anyone may use the app locally, with no account, at any age their guardian judges appropriate.
Your content is yours
Everything you write in Hearth belongs to you. We claim no ownership over your entries and we don't use them for any purpose other than providing the app (and, if you enable it, syncing them across your devices).
Acceptable use
- Use Hearth for your own personal gratitude practice.
- Don't attempt to break, overload, or gain unauthorised access to the service or other people's accounts.
- Don't use the service to store or distribute unlawful content.
Accounts
Accounts are optional. If you create one, keep your password safe — you're responsible for activity under your account. Tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised use.
The app is provided "as is"
We work hard to make Hearth reliable and to never lose your entries, and the local-first design means your data lives on your own device. Still, the app is provided without warranties, and to the extent permitted by law we are not liable for indirect or incidental damages. Please keep your own backups (Settings → Data & backups → Export).
Pricing
Hearth is free forever for anyone controlling their own data — reading, writing, and exporting your own entries, and keeping them on your own devices, never costs anything and never will. The only thing that will ever cost money is optional cloud sync and storage on Hearth's servers — Hearth Premium, $5/month including 1 GB of encrypted storage, then $0.50 per 100 MB per month, billed monthly (no annual plan, no lifetime option) — holding your encrypted entries and keeping them in step across your devices. Premium is not active yet: sync and storage are currently free for every account, and notice will be given before that changes. You can export your full journal at any time (Settings → Data & backups → Export) to keep your own backup, switch devices, or change formats.
Once Premium is switched on: a subscription renews automatically every month at the then-current price until you cancel it. You can cancel any time, with no fee, from Settings → Account & sync → Manage subscription (or by writing to support); cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep what you paid for until the period you already paid for ends. The base monthly charge is refundable if you ask within 14 days of that charge; storage billed beyond what is included is metered to the month it was used and is not refundable once billed, the same way a utility bill isn't. Sales tax or VAT is added where the law requires it, shown before you pay. We'll give notice before any price change takes effect for you.
For how we protect your data, including what we do in the unlikely event of a data breach, see our Privacy Policy.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the State of New York, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute not otherwise resolved will be brought in the state or federal courts located in New York, and you consent to that venue.
Changes
We may update these terms; we'll change the date above when we do. Continued use means you accept the updated terms.
